By: Larry Donnelly |
Larry Donnelly joined the RAF in 1937 nurturing an ambition to become a pilot. He initially trained as a wireless operator air-gunner and was flying in that capacity when war broke out in 1939. Although not yet a pilot he was in the air and survived many operational tours between 1939 and 1943 in Bomber and Coastal Commands (during which time he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal). He took every opportunity to persevere in his mission to become a pilot, and was selected for pilot training in 1943. He finally achieved his coveted ‘wings’ in 1945. Much of the book covers Larry’s wartime experiences. He writes in a very readable style and draws on diaries and reminiscences of fellow service personnel to give a full picture of many of the events he describes.
